This talk was given at YOW! Melbourne 2023.
My passion is building software that extracts the most out of the hardware we have available. Many of the systems we grow up with and rely on (databases, caches, queues, telemetry systems and more) are grounded on assumptions that don’t hold for modern hardware.
This talk aimed to revive the art and practice of building systems from core principles. I wanted the audience to leave with renewed enthusiasm for spending innovation tokens on building software, and practical ideas for how to do that within their teams and organisations.
